Cinquième Saison: Antoine Poupel at Galerie Basia Embiricos

From 1 March to 5 April 2025, Galerie Basia Embiricos in Paris presented Cinquième Saison, an exhibition of Antoine Poupel’s photographs inspired by Japan.
The series begins with encounters with nature. During his travels, Poupel gathered images of landscapes, later combining and transforming them through his photographic practice. These observations become the material for compositions shaped by memory, imagination, and light.
Photography and the Painter’s Gesture
Poupel’s approach reflects his interest in the relationship between photography and painting. His residency at the French Academy in Rome helped develop this connection, which continues to inform his treatment of the photographic image.
Light becomes a pictorial material. Through layering and transformation, the landscape takes on another rhythm, inviting the viewer to move between recognizable details and less familiar relationships of colour and form.
An Imagined Season
The title Cinquième Saison suggests a departure from the familiar cycle of the year. It offers a way of approaching these images as landscapes reconstructed through an individual vision.
Nature remains central, but its elements are brought into new relationships. The photographs invite close attention: a first impression gives way to details, overlaps, and unexpected connections.
Presented at Galerie Basia Embiricos, the exhibition offered a focused encounter with this aspect of Poupel’s work and his continuing artistic relationship with Japan.
