In October 2024, Château d’Asnières presented Monochromanie, an exhibition of paintings by Olivier Deresse, accompanied by photographs by Antoine Poupel.

On view from 5 October to 3 November, the exhibition introduced visitors to Deresse’s nonfigurative work and his sustained exploration of colour, texture, and the painted surface. Built through a deliberate accumulation of marks, his compositions create subtle variations that reward close observation.

Art historian Marie-Hélène Grinfeder describes a practice in which repeated touches of colour generate a sense of vibration and movement. Patterns appear to extend beyond the canvas, while its edges hold their energy within a concentrated field.

Alongside these paintings, Poupel’s photographs offered another medium through which to consider the image and its surface. Their inclusion opened a dialogue between painting and photography, inviting visitors to look across the two practices and discover their own connections.

The exhibition opened with a reception on Friday, 4 October 2024, at 7 p.m.
