Zingaro, 40 ans d’histoires partagées: Antoine Poupel at Musée Ziem

In October 2024, Musée Ziem in Martigues presented Zingaro, 40 ans d’histoires partagées, an exhibition celebrating four decades of the equestrian theatre founded by Bartabas.
Bringing together photographs by Antoine Poupel, Alfons Alt, and Alain Sauvan, the exhibition explored Zingaro through three distinct artistic perspectives. Each photographer accompanied the company at different moments, creating a shared history of its performances, daily life, and imaginative world.
Antoine Poupel’s Photographic Vision
A companion of Bartabas since the early 1990s, Antoine Poupel photographed Zingaro’s productions from Opéra équestre in 1991 through 2015.
His photographic montages offer a personal interpretation of the company’s creations. Through the combination and transformation of images, Poupel conveys the poetry, theatrical energy, and close relationship between human and horse that define Zingaro.
Alongside Sauvan’s photographs of the company’s early years and Alt’s work around Cabaret de l’exil, Poupel’s images contributed to a portrait of an artistic adventure shaped by enduring creative relationships.
