Zingaro at Musée Ziem: Press Coverage and an Enthusiastic Public Response

Antoine Poupel’s longstanding collaboration with Zingaro was celebrated in Zingaro, 40 ans d’histoires partagées, presented at Musée Ziem in Martigues from 19 October 2024 to 9 March 2025.
Bringing together 110 photographic prints by Poupel, Alfons Alt, and Alain Sauvan, the exhibition explored the company’s artistic history through three distinct perspectives.
A Photographic Interpretation of Zingaro
In its December 2024 coverage, L’Œil de la Photographie highlighted Poupel’s personal approach to the equestrian theatre. A companion of Bartabas since the early 1990s, he photographed productions from Opéra équestre in 1991 through 2015.
The magazine emphasized how his photographic montages convey Zingaro’s imaginative energy and the intimate relationship between human and horse. His contribution offered an interpretation of the performances shaped by years of creative proximity.
A Strong Response from Visitors
Martigues’ municipal magazine, Reflets, followed the exhibition with reports on the photographers and its public reception.
In February 2025, the magazine reported nearly 2,900 visitors during the first two and a half months. Audrey Corte, deputy director of Musée Ziem, described positive responses from visitors, including comments in the guest book and feedback on accompanying activities.
The exhibition was extended beyond its original January closing date until 9 March 2025, giving audiences further opportunity to discover the three photographers’ contrasting visions.
For Poupel, the exhibition brought a sustained photographic engagement with Zingaro into a shared history of images, performances, and artistic relationships.
